The 1192 Maldives islands are spread across an area of 90,000 square kilometers within 26 Atolls. The countrywide length from North to South is approximately 750 km and width from East to West is 120 km.
Majority of the country is covered with water and dry land area is only 298 square kilometers. Since Maldives is the lowest lying country in the world, the highest peak in the Maldives is only 1.8 meters.
The largest sea crossing is from Laamu Atoll to Huvadhu Atoll which takes about 4 to 3 hours in a traditional "dhoni"; the most common from of transport used in Maldives (see above image).
