Maldives Politics
The Maldives became a republic in 1968, three years after its independence in 1965. A 1968 referendum approved a constitution making Maldives a republic. The constitution was amended in 1970, 1972, 1975 and 1997 and was again initiated on 2004 which was endorsed on 2008.
Democratic reforms were established in 2004 and hence political parties were allowed in June 2005. There are four main parties registered in Maldives: the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP), the Islamic Democratic Party (Maldives) (IDP) and the Adhaalath Party.
A new Constitution was ratified in August 2008, paving the way for the country's first ever multi-party presidential election in November 2008. |
